1) Green Team Associate

About SERC: The Student Environmental Resource Center (SERC) cultivates a collaborative space to strengthen the collective effectiveness of the sustainability community, and provides resources for students to actualize their visions of a more equitable, socially just, and resilient future.

About the position: The SERC Green Team Associate will work with the Zero Waste Research Center team on developing and expanding sustainability practices within the ASUC Student Union buildings including zero waste education efforts, vendor sustainability, and food waste recovery and reduction initiatives.

Job Summary/Job Responsibilities:

● Work closely with ASUC vendors, staff , and building occupants to communicate about zero waste and other sustainability efforts and initiatives

● Help develop and facilitate a comprehensive zero waste program for ASUC Student Union buildings

● Manage general zero waste and sustainability education for ASUC Student Union buildings

● Manage general sustainability education and promotions for building occupants and retail dining units

● Work on promoting bring-your-own reusable materials and zero waste reduction initiatives

● Research best practices, methods, and strategies in zero waste at other University campuses.

● Organize, analyze and interpret qualitative data.

● Develop and maintain professional relationships with environmental student organizations, staff, and faculty, and collaborate on zero waste initiatives

● Compile and present research to relevant stakeholders.

● Participates in weekly SERC staff meetings and semesterly SERC Retreats.

● Contributes to SERC all-team assignments and activities.

● Other duties as needed

Job Requirements:

● Be a student currently enrolled at UC Berkeley.

● Attend weekly SERC staff meetings and semesterly SERC Retreats.

● Have experience with or interest in sustainability and environmental issues, specifically zero waste

● Demonstrate strong research and analytical skills.

● Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.

● Be organized and detail-oriented.

● Demonstrate ability to work independently, take initiative, and propose innovative ideas.

● Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team and collaborate well with other people and organizations

● Must be able to work 8-10 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters.

Number of Openings: 2 Hours/Week: 8-10/hours/week, Fall and Spring Semesters

Reports to: Sharon Daraphonhdeth, Interim Director, Student Environmental Resource Center

2) Advocacy and Action Associate

Job Summary/Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides support for SERC’s advocacy campaigns
  • Create leadership and volunteer opportunities for students around political advocacy and action; Connect students to local advocacy and action events
  • Support student-led campaign groups and organizations working on current trending environmental and social justice issues by providing campus resources, visibility, and campus connections”
  • Coordinates programs and workshops around political advocacy training (ex. “Know Your Rights“trainings, “Public Comment 101”, etc.)
  • Works with the Education Associate to actively develop relationships with advocacy and activist training organizations
  • Works directly with Events Associate to organize events around political engagement and advocacy
  • Create a weekly or bi-monthly action list for students to engage in political advocacy as it relates to environmental sustainability
  • Provides weekly SERC Office Hours (2hrs/week)
  • Participates in weekly SERC staff meetings and semesterly SERC Retreats
  • Contributes to SERC all-team assignments and activities

Job Summary/Job Responsibilities:
● Cultivates and enhances SERC’s relationships with environmental student organizations
● Coordinates semesterly check-ins with environmental student organizations
● Facilitate knowledge sharing within the environmental student community
● Serve as the liaison between student organizations and SERC
● Work closely with SERC Advocacy and Action Associate to connect student organizations to
advocacy events or off-campus organizations that match their student organization mission and
values
● Supports/promotes efforts, projects, and events led by environmental student organizations via
SERC social media platforms and newsletter
● Manages the SERC Membership Program
● Establishing a physical campus presence by tabling at events and engaging student body with
SERC’s mission and efforts
● Collaborates with SERC Events Associate to host the Sustainability Involvement Expo in the Fall
● Organizes SERC Community Retreats and community building activities
● Participates in weekly SERC staff meetings and semesterly SERC Retreats
● Provides weekly SERC Office Hours (2hrs/week)
● Contributes to SERC all-team assignments and activities
